Today's class was on querying data and joining and relating tables.

GIS 111 9/28/07

This was a good class on aligning a map of an unknown coordinate system with a map of a known coordinate system. We also learned how to on-screen digitize a map of Bent Creek Trails that our instructor frequents . Pete must enjoy the outdoors although I don't know how he finds the time. I have included some of the maps of this assignment.

GIS 111 9/21/07

Well I actually did a little better than I thought I did on the test. At least I passed. Our lab was quite interesting to me. We did chapters 15 and 16 and learned how to add, modify, and remove water lines, hydrants, and property lines. I have added some of the maps from this class.

GIS 111 9/14/07

Test day! I believe I had way to much new information to learn on chapter 3 (Geodesy, Projections, and Coordinate Systems). I tryed to print off the study guide on the GIS 111 home page but all I got was a blank screen ( I found out on class of the 21st that all I needed to do was hit the refresh button to get the study guide). I guess this was foreign to more than just me. I don't think I did well on the test. Here are some of the maps we did in lab.

GIS 111 9/7/2007

Today we covered Geodesy, Datums, Map Projections and Coordinate Systems. Another class with a lot to soak up. Pete helped to explain this a lot but it still seams that things could and should be standardized more. This class has helped me realize the huge amount of manpower and time that very intelligent people take to run and update GIS systems. I really don't know if I will ever be able to make the time to do what I need to do with the Town of Mars Hill's GIS mapping but I'll have a lot better understanding of what I can and what I should rely on an GIS professional to help me with. In lab we completed chapter 13 which was also very helpful in understanding projecting data in ArcMap. I have included some final maps in this post .

Class 2, GIS 111, 8/31/07

Today we were instructed on ArcCatalog and building geodatabases. There was a lot of steps to doing this but hopefully over time this will get easier. I was especially interested in chapter 14 because the exercises were based on water lines, fire hydrants and there attributes.

I am Robert Sams and I'm taking a much needed class on GIS. I have worked with the Town of Mars Hill Public Works for almost 21 years and have used all kinds of paper maps and blueprints and even relied on past workers memory to find water and sewer lines. In the past things could be done this way even though it was much more time consuming and less reliable. In recent years due to increased work load, increased underground utility's and government mandate even small towns must join what bigger city's have been doing for years. After having Arc View GIS on our public works computer for years and relied on engineers and public agencies to help us get started I was fairly happy with the results but need to add additions and modify some of the existing data. Hopefully with instructor "Pete Kennedy's" help I can start to learn to do this.

On 8/25/07 I had my first class. Here are some of the first class lab exercises.
